MODULE D

Looking at Student Work

The purpose of this module is to gain practice in recognizing student strengths & needs in the Vital Signs of Learning through student work samples. The goal is to learn to recognize from student responses what may be interfering with what and how student work reveals how they are processing information and demonstrating academic understanding.

There is greater benefit if at least two teachers are available to share insights

Student work samples, like medical labs using blood draw or urine samples, provide a window into what is often hidden or invisible.

Each of the work samples includes:
  • the assignment or situation that prompted the student work
  • the student’s response
  • possibly a teacher’s comment or assessment
  1. Student work samples, like medical labs (e.g. blood draw, urine sample) provide a window into what is often hidden or invisible.
  2. Each of the work samples includes: the assignment or situation that prompted the student work, the student’s response, and possibly a teacher’s comment or assessment.
  3. Use the ODD or EVEN question pages and match ODD or EVEN work samples. Think through your responses to the question for each odd/even work sample. (Odd and Even sets are similar, but each student response is different. Either set provides intended practice in identifying students’ strengths and potential needs.)
  4. Refer to the scoring guides for the dominant vital sign(s) for the assignment and response that prompted the sample. For example: are the students’ responses in #7 or #8 focused on production (how) or content (what)?
  5. In the Forum, comment on whether or how the Scoring Guides Vital Signs of Learning help you identify how well students are able to demonstrate what they know and can do.
