MODULE C

Differentiating Instruction to Accommodate Student Differences

The purpose of this module is to gain practice in matching what students learn, how students learn, and how students show what they’ve learned with their different strengths or needs in the Vital Signs of Learning. The goal is to build on strengths and offer alternatives as needed to help more students succeed in learning by creatively adapting six common strategies.

Activity Steps for Module C

These activities should be done in a group of two to six Teachers.

You may play with either the same subject or with multiple subjects.

  1. Six forms of differentiation, proven to help work around student needs, are used to illustrate ways to make learning accessible to all students.
  2. Players take turns drawing a Student Card and a Strategy Card.
  3. Depending on the subject taught (middle/high) or core subject you choose (elementary), you must adapt the Strategy to match the Student's unique challenge (strength or need) as described in the Class List.
  4. Depending on (a) the lesson goal, (b) the varied needs of students, and (c) the form of differentiation, participants in this game “play” with the variables to help students be successful in learning the point of the lesson.
  5. There are no “right” or “wrong” ways to “win” at the game – as long as teachers give students varied ways to reach the learning goal.
  6. As few as two or three or as many as five or six can play the game by helping each other work out a way for specific students to “win” at learning.
  7. After playing for 5-10 turns per game, share in the Forum any insights you have gleaned from the challenge of systematically making learning more inclusive for all students.
